GUSTAV FORSLING - Defenseman - 23 - $.874MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
Forsling is an example of the "modern defenseman" gone too far. An undersized blueliner, Forsling is at his best with the puck on his stick, and his playstyle is that of an aggressive puck moving defenseman. He's shown the ability to produce points sporadically, but his production lacks the consistency of a legit NHL offensive defenseman. His defensive game, though, is atrocious. Forsling's aggressiveness causes mistakes and turnovers, and when he's in his own end Forsling often looks lost, lacking the positioning skills to be anything but a liability in his own end. Compounded with his lack of defensive awareness is a total inability to play a very physical game, and while he'll get a hit here and there, to be fair, he simply cannot win board battles consistently enough to provide defensive value. Isolated impact metrics are similarly low on Forsling's defensive ability, painting a bleak picture of Forsling's talent, measuring him as a massive 5v5 defensive liability and a complete disaster in front of the net. Given his defensive issues, Forsling hasn't been able to stick in the NHL, but maybe his trade to the defenseman factory the Carolina Hurricanes are can save his career. If he can't develop, though, he'll be stuck where he is now: a very obviously skilled defenseman who is a large liability on playing actual defense.
