GREG PATERYN - Defenseman - 29 - $2.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
While Pateryn struggled to find his place as a Montreal Canadien, he seems to have finally cemented himself as a legitimate NHL defenseman in Minnesota. Pateryn's never been a scoring defenseman, and he lacks the puck skills, offensive instincts, and skating ability to be a factor offensively. His below-average skating also translates to his abilities in transition, where he is far from an asset. That being said, Pateryn's never made his entire career rest on his offense, and it's his defense that allows him to stay in the NHL every night. Pateryn is a physical force who uses his size and strength to win puck battles and rattle off big hits. He's a very, very good defenseman in front of the net and his isolated impact metrics indicate that he's elite at crease-clearing and limiting high-danger scoring chances in front of the net. He can kill penalties and be the stabilizing, intimidating presence an aggressive puck-moving partner needs. While he's an offensive black hole and provides zero value on that end of the ice, he's a legitimately great defensive defenseman whose a real impact player in front of the net. While he won't help with zone exits he can be a huge asset at keeping high-danger chances from getting into the net, and that ability to limit his goalie's exposure to the worst kinds of shots makes him a legitimate defense-first stay-at-home #4 defenseman, who can fit on the second pairing if he's paired with an offensive puck-moving #2 defenseman.
