GARNET HATHAWAY - Right Winger - 27 - $1.50MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
SECOND OPINION 9/20/19
An undrafted forward out of Brown University, Hathaway played parts of four seasons with the Calgary Flames before signing with the Capitals on a 4 year, 6 million dollar deal. At 6’2, 210, Hathaway plays a physical, gritty game, consistently punishing the opposition and winning battles along the boards. Hathaway will even drop the gloves from time to time, too. However, his value is severely limited by his lack of speed. Furthermore, Hathaway doesn’t possess a good shot or playmaking instincts, and his defensive ability is around average. Given his age (28 in November), Hathaway seems to have plateaued at the status of a quality fourth line option, but nothing more.

An agitator by nature, Hathaway is a classic sandpaper + skill player teams love to have in their bottom-6. He's skilled enough to score very well at the AHL level, but his skill isn't high-end enough to translate that to NHL production, so he relies on his grit and energy to stick in an NHL lineup. That works for him, though, and he wins board battles and fights for pucks consistently at the highest level. He's a factor as a defensive winger and while he's not a true shutdown force he does make his presence known. He's willing to go to the dirty areas of the ice and fight for garbage goals in front of the net, but mistaking him for a 20 goal scorer would be, well, a mistake. He doesn't have the skating ability to create plays or get himself into prime shooting position, but that's not what's being asked of him. Hathaway is an agitator, someone in the lineup to be a scrappy player that gets into his opponents' heads. If that's all he's being expected to do, he'll succeed, and bring flashes of skill to the lineup here and there. He has limited upside, but he's a good bottom-6 skill + sandpaper winger.
