FREDRIK CLAESSON - Defenseman - 26 - $.700MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 3/7/19
After being a cog in the Senators' magic run to the conference finals in 2017, Claesson was cast off from Ottawa as the team chose to not tender him a qualifying offer. As a natural puck mover, Claesson's value comes from his ability to be a factor in the transition game, and assist his teammates in entering the offensive zone and carrying the puck up the ice. For everything he can do in the neutral zone, though, he has issues in the offensive and defensive zones. He's not an elite point producer, and despite his puck moving skills he lacks the offensive tools to be anything more than a marginal point producer. He also lacks a great defensive stick/good defensive instincts, and as a result can't be trusted with more than bottom pairing minutes unless he's sheltered by a top-pairing partner (like he was with Erik Karlsson). Given all of those factors, at this point, Claesson is more of a good #7 than an everyday blueliner.
