FREDERIK GAUTHIER - Center - 24 - $.675MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/22/19
Frederik Gauthier finally managed to stick in the NHL for nearly a full season in 2018-19, and showed flashes of real NHL-quality play in his 70 games. That being said, he has been a real disappointment as a former first round pick and his offensive development never really took off after his near-PPG rookie season in the QMJHL. Gauthier is a big center who uses his towering frame to provide most of his value. He's an above-average faceoff taker, and can effectively use his size and strength to provide defensive value. He's a true threat in the trenches, whether he's in front of the net battling for position or in the corners fighting for pucks. That being said, Gauthier lacks the tools to do much with the puck once he gains possession of it, and will be nothing more than a marginal offensive producer thanks to his lack of a signature offensive skill. His shot is only okay, and he isn't a great playmaker. He also needs to improve his skating and overall agility. He doesn't move very well for someone his size. What he can do, though, is win draws, be physical, and play some decent defensive hockey. If he can continue to do that and improve his overall defensive awareness, he can blossom into a decent 4C, but right now he has't shown the penalty killing chops or offensive ability for me to call him an established, quality 4C.
