FILIP HRONEK - Defenseman - 21 - $.714MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/4/19
Since being drafted in the second round of the 2016 NHL draft, Filip Hronek has developed into one of Detroit's most promising young blueliners. A natural offensive, puck moving defenseman, Hronek has scored at every level he's been at. His first full professional season in the AHL was strong, and once he made his NHL debut he impressed, posting 23 points in 46 games, good for a ~40 point pace. Hronek sees the ice well, and has a great offensive mind, able to look for holes in a defense and adequately judge where and when to join the rush and help in transition. Hronek is a strong skater and will be an asset on the power play, helping to reset after a clearance. Defensively, Hronek is still a work in progress, as he's not overly physical nor is he a shut down force, but he's a smart player and his skating abilities should allow him to be an asset with zone exits, a crucial part of defense. Also, his high hockey IQ and strong mental processing abilities should allow him to be able to read his defensive zone and interrupt opposing plays as they develop. I don't think he'll ever anchor a penalty kill, but he should eventually become a plus defender on top of his offensive chops. At this point, he should still play sheltered bottom pairing minutes to ease him into the NHL, but once he to develops and acclimates himself to the NHL he should become a good #3 puck moving defenseman with some power play upside.
