FILIP FORSBERG - Center - 25 - $6.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Filip Forsberg, despite all of his successes, is most famous around the league because of someone else's failure. Former Capitals GM George McPhee, desperate for reinforcements for his team, deep in the trenches of a playoff race, traded Forsberg, a top prospect at the time, for veteran winger Martin Erat and irrelevant grinder Michael Latta. Erat and the Capitals flamed out that season, and Forsberg has gone on to be the most talented offensive player in Nashville Predators history. Forsberg is a player who has recently struggled to stay healthy, but when he has hit the ice he's proven himself to be one of the most naturally gifted players in the league. Forsberg has soft hands and incredible hockey sense, and he just has a knowledge of where to be and what to do to get the puck in the net. Combine that with his lethal shot, and you get a play-driving point-per-game winger. There are few players more feared in 1v1 situations in hockey than Forsberg, and even fewer that can embarrass defensemen in those situations like Forsberg can. His elite skating and incredible puck skills make him a nightmare to defend, and when he unleashes his shot he's a nightmare for goalies anywhere in the offensive zone. Forsberg is also an insanely underrated defensive winger, who uses his intelligence and puck skills to be a massive help with zone entries and with covering the puck carrier. He won't win a Selke, but he's one of the game's best penalty killers at left wing in my opinion and he should only get better from here. Forsberg is an elite play-driving winger, one of the few wingers who can do it all offensively and defensively just as a first line center could. As long as he stays healthy, he should continue to become one of the game's most well-rounded scorers and one of the game's best players.
