ERIK KARLSSON

ERIK KARLSSON - Defenseman - 29 - $11.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2027-2028

LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Perhaps the best defenseman of our generation, Erik Karlsson is a truly dynamic blueliner. While he's often battling his own nagging injuries as he is opposing forwards, Karlsson still gets it done. He's famous for carrying the underdog Ottawa Senators to within a goal of the Stanley Cup finals whilst suffering from two hairline fractures in his left heel. Karlsson is a true warrior, capable of driving offensive play as a legitimate first line center would, and anchoring his team's penalty kill and top defensive pairing as a #1, shutdown defenseman would. He would probably be a good top-6 winger if he played that position, and his production for a defenseman is always among the league's best. Karlsson is a strong skater with elite vision and passing abilities, and there are certain passes that other players simply cannot make that Karlsson is not only able to but willing to make. (See the video below) Karlsson is an elite defenseman in transition and brings immense defensive value thanks to his zone-exit prowess. In his own end, Karlsson has one of the game's best defensive minds, so while he may not be the quickest or strongest when he's playing through injuries, a healthy Karlsson is a force to be reckoned with. A healthy Karlsson can muscle his way to pucks, stick to top offensive forwards and shut them down, and block shots like Kris Russel. There are few team-first, all-around dynamic defensemen like Karlsson in hockey, and as long as he's healthy he's in the top-5 for most valuable players in hockey.
