ELIAS PETTERSSON - Center/Right Winger - 20 - .925MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
After lighting up Sweden's top men's league for Vaxjo as a teenager, Pettersson made the jump to the NHL and was an immediate success story. He found an instant scoring touch at the NHL level and worked his way to a Calder-winning near point-per-game campaign. Pettersson's 19.4% shooting percentage likely won't be repeated, so bet on his goal scoring efficiency to go down, but I don't say that to take away from his talent. Pettersson is a legitimately great scorer. He has great size (that he needs to fill in to get stronger) and insane offensive instincts. His on-ice vision is just on another level, and he's an expert at threading the needle with the puck in order to set up his teammates. He's an incredibly aggressive offensive player who will stop at nothing to score. He can create scoring chances on his own and he always drives his team's offense when he's on the ice. He can shoot the puck just as well as he passes, and looks to be a point-per-game player going forward. Defensively, Pettersson is still very much a work in progress. His offensive aggressiveness can cause him to get out of position, and he's still getting acclimated to the NHL game, so I wouldn't call him a true two-way player just yet until I see a bit more. Pettersson has all the makings of a true franchise offensive player and should only get better as he matures and gets stronger.
