DYLAN LARKIN - Center - 22 - $6.1MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 8/5/19
One of the fastest skaters in the entire NHL, Dylan Larkin has grown into the offensive centerpiece of the post-streak Detroit Red Wings. He's been steadily improving over the course of his NHL career, and finally saw his offensive production explode in his fourth full season, posting an elite 32 goals and 73 points, as he saw his shooting percentage nearly double. Although this level of production may seem like a puck luck-fueled fluke, Larkin is legitimately talented enough to repeat his performance. 2018-19 finally saw Larkin learn to use his speed effectively to create time and space with the puck, and as a result his increased shooting percentage is more likely a result of him getting more high-quality offensive chances for himself rather than just plain puck luck. The common trend throughout Larkin's NHL career has been consistent, constant improvement. Larkin used to be a liability at the faceoff dot in his first full season as a center. As he saw his usage in faceoffs more than double, he got his win% to the 50% mark and then improved it to the 55% mark this past season. Similarly, Larkin's defense used to be quite uneven, as he would be able to process the game at a high level but wouldn't be able to handle high-leverage defensive situations against premier offensive forwards. Now, Larkin's skating allows him to be a strong defensive presence, bursting into and interrupting passing lanes, as well as allowing him to be a major positive on the penalty kill. Larkin has blossomed into a do-it-all first line center, and given his reported leadership abilities and strong work ethic, he could be the long sought-after heir to Henrik Zetterberg's captaincy in Detroit.
