DOUGIE HAMILTON - Defenseman - 26 - $5.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Dougie Hamilton finally seems to have found his place after uneven stints in Boston and Calgary. An elite defenseman on the offensive side of the game, Hamilton is an incredibly valuable offensive play driver. Isolated impact metrics show Hamilton to be an elite play driver of 5v5 offense, and his career body of work confirms that assertion. He's good for point production in the forties yearly, with upside for even more. Hamilton being so good offensively is not without its drawbacks, though, as his aggressive style causes him to sometimes make downright boneheaded plays with the puck. He plays mistake-prone hockey, and while his offensive production typically makes up for his mistakes, you simply do not want Hamilton on the ice for high-leverage defensive situations. That being said, Dougie Hamiton can still hold his own in a sheltered defensive role, and Isolated impact metrics confirm that point. Hamilton is a good #3 defenseman, but one whose playstyle limits his effectiveness as an all-around defenseman. He needs to be paired with a defensively strong partner, like Erik Karlsson was with Mark Methot, and he also needs to be coached by a man or woman who can effectively utilize him and keep him out of high-pressure defensive situations.
