DOMINIK SIMON - Center - 25 - $.750MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
A strong scorer at the AHL level and in the Czech Republic, Dominik Simon finally broke into the NHL as a full-timer as a 24 year old in 2018-19. His speed, versatility, and puck skills allowed him to fit all over the lineup, and he even got some time on Pittsburgh's top line. Simon isn't an overwhelming offensive talent. He has decent hands, some good wheels, and can shoot well. That being said, those tools aren't good enough for one of them to carry him to top-6 levels of scoring, and he lacks the offensive instincts to be a real killer. He can lack consistency, and he's not an elite defensive player. Some games he plays with a high motor and displays the requisite grit needed to play in the bottom-6, but other games he can look lost in his own end and can seem like a defensive liability. I still think he's a net plus in his own end, but he'll need to show he can do so with consistency. Simon is a versatile player, who can reasonably fit on every line, but at this point he's a solid third line option who brings energy, decent skill, and some speed to the third line, even if he's prone to inconsistency.
