DEREK RYAN - Center - 32 - $3.125MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Ryan is a remarkable example of someone never letting an obstacle stop them, and doing whatever it takes to achieve his dream. After being playing his heart out in Austria, Sweden, and the Canadian University System (where successful overage CHL players' hockey careers typically go to die) Ryan eventually lost his NHL rookie status at the age of 30. He had an excellent two years in Carolina, providing diligent defensive play, excellent faceoff abilities, and good high-30's point production. He turned that perseverance into a decently sized contract with his old coach who had moved on to Calgary, and continued his success as a Flame. He filled in as the much-needed 3C in Calgary, providing his trademark faceoff skills, defensive ability, and moderate high-30's point production. Father time may eventually catch up to Ryan before his contract ends, but as of right now he's a good third line center and a great asset to have in the locker room. Oh, and he can also kill penalties really, really well. Why did he ever have to leave for Austria?!?
