DENIS MALGIN - Right Winger/Center - 22 - $.690MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 3/18/19
A crafty two-way winger, Denis Malgin has struggled with inconsistency throughout his young NHL career. While he's quite versatile, can play up and down the lineup, and is capable of strong offensive production, Malgin has not been able to escape from the offensive dry spells that keep him from becoming a true top-6 winger. He'll have a game where he looks totally focused and on point, and ends with a goal and an assist, and then will follow up that game with a three game stretch where he looks totally out of place on an NHL roster. He scores too well in the AHL to be left there to develop, but obviously his struggles in the NHL indicate that he needs more seasoning. It's a problem. But given his true upside and the flashes he shows, it's obviously not a terrible problem to have. If he can be more consistent and score at a 40-ish point rate, he can be a great two-way, speedy top-9 winger. If he can't, and he sticks with this "boom or bust" approach to offense, he's likely destined to be a career journeyman, bouncing from team to team, each hoping to unlock the upside that Malgin so obviously has.
