DAVID BACKES - Center - 34 - $6MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 1/17/19
When the Bruins gave former St. Louis Blues captain David Backes a five year, $30MM contract in the 2016 offseason, many wondered why Boston made such a significant commitment to an aging, past-his-prime power forward. Since signing the contract, Backes has let down even the most pessimistic observers. So far in his Bruins career, Backes has failed to crack the teams top-6 on a regular basis. While he remains an effective two-way, physical presence on the ice most nights and has served an important role with the Bruins' power play as a screener, given his age and the toll his playstyle takes on his body, it's difficult to imagine that Backes can remain effective for the rest of his contract. As of right now, Backes is a decent middle-6 forward who brings solid intangibles, leadership and decent goal scoring ability to the table, but his best days are most definitely behind him. Given all of those factors and his contract status, he’s a negative-value asset.
