DAN HAMHUIS - Defenseman - 36 - $1.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Typically defenseman lose their effectiveness once they get to the point when they've played 15 years in the NHL and are 36 years old. Not Dan Hamhuis. Sure, Hamhuis isn't producing like he used to, he's more of a single digit scorer than being the near-40 point guy he was early in his twenties. That being said, Hamhuis brings a wealth of experience to the Nashville blueline and is still a very effective defensive defenseman. He's not as fast as he once was, nor is he as fluid of a skater. He can get caught on the rush by faster skaters and he's far from being the effective puck mover he once was. What Hamhuis can do, though, is kill penalties, where his regressing foot speed is far less of an issue and Hamhuis can take full advantage of his defensive instincts and sound positional awareness. Hamhuis knows where to be to structure an effective PK unit and the results are there to back it up. So Hamhuis shouldn't play high-leverage even strength minutes to avoid him potentially getting caught on a rush, but if he can be used effectively he can still be a valuable #5 defenseman who specializes in killing penalties.
