Prout is a very physical defenseman. In the absence of any high end offensive skill or even average skating abilities to be able to be a puck mover, Prout has relied on his willingness to throw the body around to stay on an NHL roster. Standing three inches above six feet, he does have good size for this playstyle, and is conservative enough to play in a sheltered, risk-free role. Given his lack of high-end defensive skills, he should not play more than fifteen minutes per night if he is playing, and given his strengths and weaknesses, Prout is a prototypical enforcer-esque seventh defenseman.
