CURTIS McELHINNEY - Goalie - 36 - $1.30MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
After being claimed off of waivers, Curtis McElhinney had a great single season in Carolina, winning 20 games in 33 starts and posting a .912 sv% / 2.58 GAA. McElhinney is the definition of a journeyman backup, but he's not some trash that teams play hot potato with, like they do with Zac Rinaldo. Instead, McElhinney genuinely improves each team he stops at, providing veteran guidance to growing goaltenders as well as 20-30 solid starts. He's as reliable as they come, and despite his age he still looks as capable as ever. He should give Louis Domingue some legitimate competition to be the backup to Andrei Vasilevskiy, and as long as age doesn't catch up to him too soon, McElhinney should continue to back up goalies for the forseeable future.
