CRAIG SMITH - Center - 29 - $4.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After Craig Smith hit a rock-bottom point in his career in 2016-17, scoring only 29 points on a stacked Predators team, he responded, re-earning the trust of his coaches and having a career renaissance, scoring 25 goals and 51 points the following season. While Smith may not have reached such lofty heights this past season, he still had a fine season and cemented his place as a key secondary scorer for the Predators. Smith has a quick release and a very strong shot, and that shot, combined with his size and strength, allows Smith to reliably score 20+ goals with consistency. Smith can help out a power play as a triggerman and has tremendous scoring upside in the right situation thanks to his shot. If he plays with linemates that make the most out of his signature tool, he can explode. That being said, Smith is not a self-starter and needs a linemate to drive play for him to produce. He's prone to scoring slumps and can sometimes look lost in games. Defensively, Smith is a capable player and provides physical value thanks to his size, but he shouldn't be trusted with high-leverage defensive situations and should not kill penalties. Craig Smith is a good third line winger or a mediocre second line scorer with a great shot and some upside in the right situation, even if he's a bit streaky.
