CONNOR MURPHY - Defenseman - 26 - $3.85MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
While Connor Murphy may have disappointed as a former top-20 pick, he has still carved out a career for himself as a solid, if relatively unimpressive defensive defenseman in the NHL. Murphy has above-average size, and he usually makes the most out of his large frame, using it to reel off big hits and win battles for pucks. He's got a heavy stride and isn't the best skater, so he needs to stay in a crease-clearing role rather than a puck moving role. His offense is limited to simply marginal contributions, but that's not his job. His job is to intimidate opposing forwards and make getting to and staying in front of his net as difficult of a job as possible. While his defensive zone positioning is sometimes spotty, Murphy largely succeeds at this task, and assuming he's healthy he can reliably anchor a bottom pairing, making him a #4 defenseman. While he shouldn't be asked to play a top-4 role with another #4 or a #3, if he's paired with an offensively focused #2 defenseman capable of anchoring a second pairing he can be successful in top-4 minutes. As of right now, though, he's a strong bottom-pairing defensive defenseman.
