CONNOR McDAVID - Center - 22 - $12.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2026-2027
LAST UPDATED 8/3/19
Since blowing up the OHL as a fifteen year old, Connor McDavid has been on the fast track to NHL superstardom and finally seems to have established himself as the game's most prolific offensive player and most valuable player overall. McDavid is a generationally talented player. His production can back that. He has not yet posted below 100 points in a full NHL season and has been able to shoot at usually unsustainably-efficient rates despite being a very clearly pass-first player. He's an elite play driver, and pairs his once-in-a-lifetime skating abilities with an unfathomably high hockey IQ to make something happen every time his skates hit the ice. The NHL simply has not seen an offensive engine like McDavid in its league since pre-concussion Crosby, and McDavid has the ability to elevate teammates that only elite first line centers have. Defensively, McDavid's intensely aggressive play style means he won't be Bob Gainey for the Oilers, but he can still hold his own there and contribute on the penalty kill. That being said, McDavid's defense is simply an afterthought, as whenever he's on the ice the puck is on his stick in the offensive zone about to be put into the net either by him or by one of his linemates. McDavid is the best power play engine in the NHL and a threat to score whenever he hits the ice, regardless of his competition or the situation. Give the puck to him in a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation and I guarantee he'll find a way to create some meaningful scoring chance. He's that good. Now that he's locked up for the maximum term, it's up to Edmonton to find a way to win with one of the most talented players the game has ever seen.
