CODY McLEOD - Left Winger - 34 - $.750MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 1/28/19
Despite possessing no discernible high-end skills, McLeod as carved out a decade-long career as one of the NHL's last enforcer-like players. Part of a dying breed of players, McLeod serves little purpose to a team's 23-man roster besides playing ~7 minutes a night (in the nights he doesn't spend scratched) protecting his team's best skill players. He doesn't have good hands, his defense is sub-par, and his skating is poor. What McLeod does do well, though, is fight with other players and fight for pucks. He'll never take a shift off and he'll always stick up for his team. With the right usage and with enough skill, there's genuine value there. The issue with McLeod is that while he is not being overused he simply is not skilled enough to warrant using a roster spot on him. For a rebuilding team, his sub-par play can help his team earn a high draft pick and his toughness can protect a team's vulnerable young assets, so that's likely why he still has a job, but still the fact remains that he should stay far away from any contending team.
