CODY CECI - Defenseman - 25 - $4.5MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/18/19
A hometown kid and former first round pick, Cody Ceci has fallen out of favor in Ottawa. Drafted to be a reliable, two-way top-4 defenseman, Ceci has shown flashes of being exactly that but brought with those flashes long stretches of lackluster play. His awareness defensively and offensively leaves much to be desired, and he's being utilized like a high-end defenseman, which he isn't. He processes the game too slowly to be counted on for 20+ tough minutes per night, but the flashes of his upside happen frequently enough for him to bring value to a team as a limited-usage bottom-pairing dman. He was being overpaid by Ottawa, and if he is qualified by Ottawa he will remain that way, but if he gets a chance to have a change of scenery maybe another system can bring out his best qualities. At this point, though, Ceci is a flawed #5, but with upside to be a reliable #4 in the right situation.
