CLAUDE GIROUX - LW/C - 31 - $8.275MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After posting only 58 points in 2015-16, a season where he forced himself through nagging injuries, Giroux finally looked done. He'd lost a step, and looked to be aging rapidly, even if it was still a bit early. Then, he was moved to LW and united with Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek, and he promptly put up 102 points the following season, and 85 the year after, restoring his place among the game's most prolific playmakers. Claude Giroux has absolutely elite playmaking tools. He's got incredible puck skills, a great eye for making tough passes, and good top-end speed. He's always a threat when he touches the puck and he (as you would expect from a converted center) drives play like a 1C would from the winger position, a rare trait. Giroux can quarterback a power play as a winger and singlehandedly ensure that unit's efficiency. He's a true offensive engine and as long as his hands and feet don't regress too much with age, should continue to be going forward. Defensively, Giroux is an elite player at the faceoff dot and possesses an incredible hockey IQ. He's a very underrated defensive forward and can be a major asset on the penalty kill. He won't win a Selke, but maybe he should get more consideration than he does, even if his aggressive offensive style is more prone to turnovers than a true two-way style would be. Giroux is an elite play-driving winger who plays like a 1C and is the force behind Philadelphia's offensive resurgence.
