CHRISTIAN JAROS - Defenseman - 23 - $.755MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/24/19
Taking advantage of Ottawa's talent exodus, Jaros was able to play 61 NHL games as a 22 year old. His age showed, as he seemed inexperienced and sometimes lost in his own end. He plays a more defensive game game, and provides Ottawa with good size and skating from the back end. He's not a high-end offensive producer, and while he can help with puck movement in transition he shouldn't be trusted on a power play. Isolated impact metrics support these conclusions about his offense, painting him as a pretty sizeable negative contributor to his team's ability to generate offense. On defense, Jaros is a slight positive according to these metrics, but in game film Jaros sometimes looks confused in the back end. Despite his size, Jaros isn't a physical player and can struggle to reliably win board battles. It seems like Jaros was rushed into a league he wasn't ready for, and should probably be demoted to the AHL so his development can continue. If Jaros can learn how to use his size to be a more physical player, as well as improve his defensive awareness, he could end up a #5 or #6 defenseman, but his NHL career definitely rests on him making those improvements, because right now Jaros isn't good enough to be more than an eight or a nine on the defensive depth chart.
