CHRIS TANEV

CHRIS TANEV - Defenseman - 29 - $4.45MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021

LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
Despite seeing his name swirling around the league in trade rumors for a while now, Chris Tanev remains a Canuck, and he's still one of the better defensemen the Canucks employ. Tanev has some legit tools. He has size, incredible strength, and some really refined defensive technique. He's adept at using a mix of his body and his stick to take the puck away and kill chances, and he has exceptional defensive awareness, rarely ever out of position. He can clear the crease, win board battles, and anchor a penalty kill. That being said, Tanev's game is a bit one-dimensional. For everything he can do in his own end, he can't do in the offensive zone. Tanev is a complete offensive liability, lacking strong puck skills, playmaking instincts, or a valuable point shot. His skating is merely average at best and he won't be a major factor in the transition game. As a result, any point production he gets is merely a product of the linemates he shares the ice with, and he will rarely, if ever, create offense on his own. Still, he's a tremendously valuable defenseman because his ability to keep the puck out of his own net is so good. Simply speaking, very little scoring will go on when Tanev hits the ice, both by the other team and by his. There's value in that, and I wonder how he would fare if paired with a true offensive wizard from the back end. Maybe a pairing with Quinn Hughes is in the mix? To maximize his value, Tanev will need to show he can stay healthy, and if he's shown anything other than great defense in his NHL career it's been his inability to stay healthy. Tanev has yet to play in 82 games in a full season and has not played in 60 games since 2015-16. If he can stay healthy we can perhaps see him gain the leaguewide respect he deserves. But until that happens, he'll be more of an elite defensive (but terrible offensive) #2/3 defenseman.
