CHARLIE MCAVOY - Defenseman - 21 - $.916MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 1/30/19
The 14th overall pick in 2016, McAvoy is considered one of the best young defensemen in the NHL. Since debuting in the 2017 playoffs, the former Boston University standout has proven that he can be a contributor at both ends of the ice. At 6’1, 208 lbs., McAvoy is scrappier than he seems, and combines this scrappiness with excellent skating, passing, vision, and offensive awareness. McAvoy consistently makes strong breakout passes and is more than capable of quarterbacking a powerplay. There is one main issue with McAvoy, however: even at 21, it has been impossible for him to remain healthy. After injuries limited him to 63 games as a rookie, an irregular heartbeat has kept him in-and-out of the lineup again in 2018-19. While McAvoy has been impressive when healthy, this injury trend certainly isn’t a good sign for a long NHL career, especially given the heart issue. Should McAvoy overcome his durability issues, however, he has all the tools to replace Chara as the Bruins' #1 defenseman and contend for the Norris trophy in his prime.
