CASEY NELSON - Defenseman - 26 - $.812MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/25/19
An undrafted player, Casey Nelson has used his decent size and skating ability to turn himself into a marginal NHL player. He can skate well and be an asset with the puck in transition, but his raw offensive skill isn't good enough for him to be anything more than a sporadic point producer. He's got average defensive positioning skills but despite his above-average size he isn't a physical player, and therefore struggles to beat opposing forwards for pucks reliably. This inability to play a physical game, paired with his mediocre defensive positioning and lackluster offense makes Nelson a very limited defenseman, but his abilities in the transition game as well as his ability to not be an outright liability in the areas he's below-average in makes him a safe, if unexciting mobile #7 defenseman.
