CARL SODERBERG - Center - 33 - $4.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-20201
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
Since coming over from Boston Carl Soderberg has been inconsistent. He started and finished his Colorado tenure with 51 and 49 point performances, but in between those two campaigns were a 37 point season and an insanely terrible 14 point season. (in 80 games). Right now, Soderberg is probably more of that 40-point center he was last season, and the Coyotes obviously believe he can be that as they traded for him. Soderberg has always had a two-way flair to his game, and with his big frame and strong hockey IQ Soderberg is a contributor on 5v5 defense and on the penalty kill. Offensively, Soderberg is a strong shooter and has 20 goal upside. He's a smart player and can use his size to play in front of the net and create messy chances. He's a strong offensive center and can play on the second power play unit as a screener. He's not a play driver, but he's a capable performer, and his ~40 point production combined with his strong defensive ability makes him a good 3C at the NHL level, even if his age means regression is likely in store sooner rather than later. His cap hit is also a little steep given his age, but if he has a repeat season that production is easily worth $4.75MM against the cap.
