CARL GUNNARSON - Defenseman - 32 - $1.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
While he only played in a career-low 25 games this past season, Carl Gunnarsson made his mark on the Blues' cup run. He scored a crucial Cup Finals overtime goal, and got his first ring. Gunnarsson is the kind of player who's best when he's not noticed. Gunnarsson is a decently big defenseman with a good mind and good physicality. He's no Robert Hagg, but he knows how to use his big frame to his advantage and he can effectively wage war in front of the net. Gunnarsson is also a plus away from the puck, as he has good positioning skills and is generally responsible. Gunnarsson isn't a fast skater, and lacks the offensive tools necessary to be an impact point producer. Gunnarsson has definite defensive value and can genuinely help kill penalties, but he needs to stay healthy and play in the right role to do so. He isn't the most talented player, and shouldn't play more than is absolutely necessary, but he's big, and he's smart, and he can kill penalties, so there will always be room for a defense-first, mistake-limiting penalty kill specialist like Gunnarsson on teams' bottom pairings, and especially if that players has a Stanley Cup on his resume.
