CARL DAHLSTROM

CARL DAHLSTROM - Defenseman - 24 - $.850MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022

LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
The quality of Chicago's defenses have taken a hit in recent years, and Carl Dahlstrom getting 38 games in 2018-19 is evidence of that. Normally, big, offensively limited and defensively weak physical defensemen would not have a place on Chicago's blueline. With Brent Seabrook making what he's making, though, players like Dahlstrom are forced into the lineup. I don't have anything against Carl. I genuinely think that he has the size and draft pedigree to be a legitimate NHL defenseman, but I also think that he isn't ready for NHL duty just yet. He's severely limited offensively, and will be a liability with the puck on his stick. Similarly, he has challenges defensively and isolated impact metrics show Dahlstrom to be a major liability in front of the net. If Dahlstrom can work on his skating and defensive play in order to become more like an Oesterle-eque big puck mover, he can fit on a bottom pairing long term. But right now, he's a #8/9 defenseman who belongs in the AHL.
