CAM TALBOT

CAM TALBOT - Goalie - 31 - $2.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021

LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Cam Talbot's career trajectory has gone south rapidly. A few years ago, he started 73 games for an upstart playoff contender and had a 12.21 GSAA and a .919 sv%. Great numbers, and he nearly won 50 games. He even got some down-ballot Hart consideration and came in fouth in Vezina voting. That was after he came seventh in Vezina voting in 2014-15, after starting 34 games and posted a .926. There was the making of an elite goaltender in Talbot. (Side note, how people gave Vezina votes to a starter who only started 34 games is beyond me, but anyway) Talbot then had a disaster of a 2017-18 season, where his GAA soared above 3.00 and his GSAA hit nearly ten below zero. He then continued to struggle behind a poor Edmonton defense and had the starting job seized from him by Mikko Koskinen. Talbot has above-average size, is decently athletic, and moves well. He's a relatively safe goaltender and isn't all that prone to meltdowns, he just doesn't always make the high-end saves the game's elite do. He's got a habit more recently that's developed of giving up a soft goal here and there, and that needs to end if he wants to rebound. The frame and upside is there for Talbot to re-assert himself as a starting goalie, but the past two years of work have not been promising. I hope for Talbot's sake he can rebound, and goalies are difficult to predict the futures' of, so maybe Talbot works out. As of right now he's a durable backup who can take over for a large workload if needed, but also one whose performance will be volatile.
