CALVIN PICKARD - Goalie - 27 - $.750MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Pickard is an interesting goaltender. He was thrown to the fire as a 24 year old, starting 48 games on a generationally bad Colorado team. He played surprisingly well considering the circumstances, posting a .904 sv% and a sub-3.00 GAA. He followed that season by being Canada's starter in the World Championships, getting claimed in the expansion draft, being traded to Toronto, and then making stops there, Philadelphia, and Arizona before signing in Detroit. He's quite the well-traveled goalie, but at only 27 years old there is still hope for him to find consistent action at the NHL level. He's a steady goalie, but without exceptional athleticism or elite size, it'll be difficult for him to find a team willing to bet on him for anything more than sporadic backup duty. He's shown the ability to be more than just a backup before, but he's also shown a weakness for giving up easy goals, and those two reputations he have balance each other out. I fully believe in Pickard, and think he can be more than just a low-end backup, but that's just a hunch. Goalies are impossible to project, as we all know. I wouldn't bet against him, though.
