CALLE JARNKROK - Center - 27 - $2.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After locking up Calle Jarnkrok to an extension that sees him hit free agency in 2022-2023, and protecting him over noted goal scorer James Neal in the expansion draft, the Predators were likely banking on some real improvement from Jarnkrok, but that never came. Now Jarnkrok isn't without his tools, that's for sure, he's a deadly quick skater with great north-south speed and decent edge work. He can turn on a dime and race for pucks with the best of them. Jarnkrok hasn't been able to leverage that speed into consistent scoring, though, as he's the kind of player whose brain is a few steps behind his feet, and he can find himself with the puck in a great scoring chance, only to waste it because he made up his mind with what to do with the puck too late and the goalie has adjusted or Jarnkrok isn't in prime scoring position anymore. Jarnkrok still scores reasonably well despite this flaw, and thirty points is nothing to scoff at for someone only making $2MM against the cap, but given how strong his tools are with his feet they're likely expecting more. Defensively, Jarnkrok's speed allows him to be a threat in shorthanded situations and allows him to be an asset on the forecheck and backcheck. He's not an imposing physical force but he's a plus defensive player who can kill penalties. So even if Jarnkrok remains "just" a 30 point player, his defensive value and speed will make him a good third line two-way forward for the duration of his contract.
