BRIAN DUMOULIN - Defenseman - 27 - $4.1MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Despite only scoring 3 goals last season, and only having 10 goals to his name in his 300+ games of NHL work, Brian Dumoulin is still a very valuable defenseman. He's played tough minutes for Pittsburgh for years now, and the Penguins don't win the 2017 Stanley Cup without him. Dumoulin is a defender with above-average size, which allows him to be a force in the tough areas of the ice and play a reasonably physical game. He's definitely no Radko Gudas, obviously, but he can sporadically throw the body around and is able to mostly use his size to his advantage. Dumoulin has good mobility for a defenseman his size and is an asset in transition, facilitating zone exits. He's not the most stable defender when he decides to get into the rush or has to endure tons of offensive pressure, and his isolated impact metrics reflect that, measuring him as a defensive liability on the PK. I still think that Dumoulin has the ability to kill penalties, but he needs to be able to use his size to defend the net better if he wants to do so. He's a good #4 defenseman right now, capable of anchoring a bottom pairing or fitting in on a second pairing with a #2.
