BRETT PESCE - Defenseman - 24 - $4.025MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2024-2025
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Standing three inches above six feet, with incredible strength and defensive instincts, Brett Pesce has quietly become one of Carolina's most valuable players. Isolated impact metrics are incredibly high on Pesce's defensive value, showing him to be a strong defensive contributor and a downright incredible penalty killer. Pesce is not offensively skilled, and lacks the puck skills and transitional ability to be a difference maker offensively. That being said, Pesce is an elite defensive defenseman, capable of eating tough defensive minutes and anchoring an entire power play unit. Pesce is that rare breed of defensive defenseman who is capable of unlocking an offensively-focused partner's full potential, and that makes him incredibly valuable for the development of younger players, especially someone like the recently-acquired Gustav Forsling. Going forward, if Pesce can improve his offensive game he can potentially become a #1 defenseman, but that doesn't seem likely. Instead, Pesce seems set to be an elite shut down defenseman, capable of anchoring a power play and being the unheralded partner an elite offensive defenseman requires.
