Lernout is a punishing defensive defenseman who uses his physicality to kill chances. Lernout is very poor offensively, and he lacks the top-end speed and skating to be effective when transitioning the puck up the ice. He is most definitely not a skill defenseman, but his ability to fight for pucks and battle in front of the net makes him valuable in his own end. As a best case scenario, he ends up a rattling, physical #5-6, but due to his lack of skill it's a bit more likely that he never quite gets there.
