BRAYDON COBURN - Defenseman - 34 - $1.7MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Braydon Coburn has been playing in the NHL for more than a decade, and has cemented his place as a consistent defensive contributor over that decade. Coburn is a towering defenseman with a big frame and a long reach. That size makes him a force to be reckoned with in front of the net and in the corners, and gives him much of his defensive value. Coburn can rattle off big hits, outmuscle smaller forwards for pucks, and take up space on the penalty kill. Coburn has never been the fastest, and what foot speed he did have has regressed, making him a tougher defensive sell at even strength. He can get beaten by the pure speed of opposing forwards at 5v5, and needs a faster partner to help cover for him when the opposition is on the rush. While he may sometimes get exposed by speedy forwards at 5v5, that weakness isn't a huge deal on the penalty kill, where Coburn really thrives. His size allows him to take up space, block shots, and fight for pucks, and he's still an effective penalty killer. Offensively, Coburn's lack of speed means he won't be a factor in the transition game, and his lack of puck skills means he shouldn't be facilitating the offensive zone passing game. That being said, he's big enough and smart enough to seal the wall well and be a safe outlet pass in case the forward on his side is feeling too much pressure. Coburn can provide a bit of offensive value, but his lack of speed and puck skills means he's a definite offensive minus. Coburn's defensive value on the PK means he's still an NHL caliber defender, though, and Coburn can fit in an NHL lineup as a defensive veteran #6 who specializes in killing penalties but will need to be partnered with a speedier #4 defenseman to help him on offense and on 5v5 defense against the rush.
