BRAYDEN SCHENN - Center - 28 - $6.50MM Cap Hit - UFA 2028-2029
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Brayden Schenn was a great fit after being traded from Philadelphia, and he scored a career high 70 points centering Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz. The arrival of Ryan O'Reilly knocked Schenn down a peg, and he reverted back to his career norms of production, but that's not to say that Schenn lost considerable value to his team. Sure, 54 points isn't 70 points, but I view Schenn's most recent point decrease more as a correction, Schenn going back to being the player he naturally is, than Schenn actually regressing and changing into a worse player. Schenn is still a smart, speedy offensive contributor who provides value on both ends of the ice. Schenn brings energy and effort to each and every one of his shifts, and that energy reverberates across the lineup. Schenn has good puck skills and can set up his linemates, and capably drive offensive play for a second line. He's an asset on the man advantage and brings some grit despite not being the biggest player. Defensively, Schenn is smart and brings defensive diligence and effort, but he simply is not physical enough or strong enough in coverage to be a defensive anchor. He won't be an outright liability, but I struggle to call him a defensive plus. With Schenn's ~25 goal, ~55 point production annually, and his value as an energizer and offensive firestarter, Schenn is a good 2C who's capable of faking it as a 1C when given incredible linemates.
