BRAYDEN POINT - Center - 23 - RFA
LAST UPDATED 8/22/19
Brayden Point is five-foot-ten, 166 pounds. Because of that, he fell to the third round of the 2014 NHL draft. That was a mistake. Point rode a significant rise in his shooting percentage (14.7% -> 21.5%!) and the offensive explosion of the Tampa Bay Lightning as a whole to 92 points last season. I don't mention those outside factors to deride Point's overall talent, I just mean to say that I'm skeptical about whether he'll be able to score 40 goals again given that 20%+ shooting percentage seasons don't typically repeat. Still, Point is an elite offensive talent. He's lightning quick (sorry), has elite offensive instincts, and one deadly shot. His size is still an issue, but he's such a strong skater that the separation he creates with his legs is more than enough to be able to set up his teammates. Point is an absolutely incredible power play generator, and he can be the engine with which a team's first unit man advantage flows. Point is a true play driver, and could replace Steven Stamkos as the Lightning's first line center in very short order. Defensively, Point's lack of size means he won't be able to fight his way for pucks in the corners or suffocate opposing forwards with unending pressure, but he is very smart and he's also fast enough to be in the right place at the right time to make an impact. I don't think he'll win Selke trophies, but he's far from a defensive liability and is a huge help with zone exits. Point is an all-around valuable center who can absolutely bring it on the power play and in the offensive zone. He's one of the most dynamic young centers in the game and should cement his place among the game's elite 1C's going forward.
