BRAYDEN McNABB - Defenseman - 28 - $2.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
Brayden McNabb finally established himself as an LA King as a 24 year old, but the team still didn't see enough in him to use one of their scarce expansion draft protection slots on him. That proved to be great for Vegas, as McNabb has become a valuable defensive anchor for the team. He's a big defenseman with a history of playing a rugged, big-minute physical game. In Vegas that's what he's brought, and while there are positives and negatives to his game he's largely a valuable presence on their blueline. The positives to McNabb are largely centered around his value as a physical force. He can clear space around the net, win board battles, and kill penalties thanks to his size and defensive tools. There's real value in that, but unfortunately McNabb doesn't move very well and has little offensive value. He lacks the puck skills to be a playmaking defenseman and lacks the mobility to be an asset in transition. So his game is a bit limited. But that's fine, because coaches know how to use him, and he's 28, so no coaches are expecting some unheard-of revolution in McNabb's game. He's a #4 defensive defenseman at his absolute best, killing penalties and anchoring a bottom pairing while also filling in sporadically on the second pairing if needed.
