BRADY SKJEI - Defenseman - 24 - $5.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2024-2025
LAST UPDATED 3/6/19
The Rangers' first round pick in the 2012 draft, Skjei took advantage of the extensive time he was afforded in the NCAA to develop into the Rangers' best all-around blueliner. A natural puck mover, Skjei broke into the NHL scoring 39 points as a rookie on a strong Rangers team. While he hasn't quite reached those heights since as the Rangers have plunged into the depths of a rebuild, there still is immense offensive upside for Skjei. Defensively, Skjei has yielded mixed results, and while he sometimes shows flashes of defensive brilliance, he also often looks lost in his own end and is prone to costly mistakes. He isn't big enough or strong enough to be an elite crease-clearing presence, but obviously those disadvantages are what allows him to be such a strong puck mover. At this point, Skjei has cemented himself as a valuable top-4 defenseman in the NHL, but for him to advance beyond his current status as a strong #4/weak #3, he'll need to round out his defensive game and find more offensive consistency.
