BLAKE WHEELER - Right Winger - 33 - $8.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2024-2025
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
I think the Bruins regret trading this one. While he was a fine player in Boston, and had a strong 21+ goal, 45 point rookie season, he never quite got to where the Bruins wanted, so they shipped him to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg Wheeler's had a career renaissance, and he's been among the game's most prolific players over the past 160 games. His back-to-back 91 point seasons have been masterpieces, and a true testament to his ability to get better with age. Wheeler's size and strength give him great puck possession abilities, and he's a genuinely difficult player to take the puck from. As a result, he creates all the time and space on offense he needs, and is a great playmaker as a result. He's also an above-average shooter and can score 20 goals with consistency. The real value lies in his playmaking, though, and his blend of puck protection abilities and incredible hockey IQ makes him a deadly setup man. Defensively, Wheeler is a force. His size, strength, and intelligence are all powerful defensive tools, and he's a real impactful defensive winger. He won't win a Selke, but he can anchor a PK and be trusted in tough defensive situations. He's a brilliant all-around winger who doesn't get nearly the respect he deserves. A true franchise winger whose prime came too late in his career to be the superstar he deserves to be.
