BEN CHIAROT

BEN CHIAROT - Defenseman - 28 - UFA in $3.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023

LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
After an underrated and steady season in Winnipeg, Ben Chiarot got a pretty sizable free-agent offer from the Habs. Chiarot plays a stabilizing brand of hockey, lacking the elite skills to be a true difference-maker but possessing the smarts, size, and puck skills to be a calming, defensively sound defenseman. Chiarot doesn't have all that much in the way of offense. His puck moving abilities are limited, and he should minimize his stick's contact with the puck. That being said, he does have a decent point shot and can be a legitimate threat from the point. Defensively Chiarot, as I mentioned, prioritizes stability above all else. While he does have some physicality in his game, he won't abandon his defensive post to make a big hit, and he won't go out of his way to damage the team with bad penalties. He won't win Montreal games, but he'll keep them from losing them, if that makes sense. He's a fine #4 defenseman who can anchor a bottom pairing or fill in on a second pairing with a more aggressive offensive partner.
