BEN BISHOP - Goalie - 32 - $4.91MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 8/17/19
One of the largest goalies in the NHL, Ben Bishop has been the consistent starting goaltender Dallas has been missing for years. After dealing with the frustrating inconsistency of longtime starter Kari Lehtonen, the Stars signed Bishop to a hefty contract as a free agent, hoping that he could stabilize their franchise in net. While he has battled injuries and has yet to start 55 games in a season as a Star, Bishop has brought an elite level of play in the crease to Dallas when he has gotten to play. In 46 starts this past season, Bishop posted a 1.98 GAA and a .934 sv%, both elite numbers. When he’s able to stay healthy, Bishop is able to use his incredible size to square up to shooters and remove room in the net for them to score. He has good command of his angles and moves with intent, rather than out of desperation. He’s a crisp skater and has decent puck moving abilities, but his inability to stay healthy has a major impact on his value. If Dallas could count on Bishop to start 55-60 games yearly and stay healthy for the playoffs, he’d be one of the game’s most valuable netminders, but because of his inability to stay healthy he’s still in the high-end middle tier of starting goalies, rather than the top-5.
