AXEL ANDERSSON - Defenseman - 18 - Drafted 2018 #57 Overall
LAST UPDATED 2/6/19
Boston’s 2nd round pick (57th overall) in 2018, Anderson is an interesting blue line prospect for the B’s. At 6’1, 179 lbs, Andersson still needs to fill out his frame a bit, meaning that he probably won’t be able to contribute for another few years. However, Andersson has tantalizing upside. A quick skater and solid passer, Andersson has the tools to be a mobile, puck moving defenseman in the NHL. However, there is some reason for concern regarding Andersson’s development. For one, up until the 2018-2019 season, Andersson had been limited to Swedish Super Elite minor league teams and now has struggled to adjust to pro play in with Sweden’s Södertälje SK, albeit carving out a regular role for himself in the team’s bottom pairing. Furthermore, scouts worry that Andersson won’t be able to utilize his best assets (speed and passing) effectively on smaller North American rinks. The definition of a boom-or-bust pick. Has the upside of a valuable, puck moving top-4 defenseman, but he's not a sure thing.
