AUSTIN WATSON - Left Winger - 27 - $1.10MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Look, I'm not here to judge Watson's personal life. He's been suspended and faced issues at home, and I simply do not know enough about the situation to pass judgement on Austin as a person, so I'm going to stick to evaluating his play on the ice. I'm going to plainly say it right here, I do not condone domestic violence in any form and if Austin Watson has any issues that get to the point of criminality he should not touch an NHL ice surface. But that being said, I'm not an expert on the situation and my job is to evaluate his value as a player, so that's what I'm going to stick to. On the ice, Watson is a physical power winger who lacks scoring ability but makes up for it with his defensive chops. Watson is a capable penalty killer and a smart defender. He's at home in the dirty areas of the ice and he can be an asset to a team's defensive efforts. He's not a great skater and won't help very much in transition or in the offensive zone, but if he's sheltered in a purely defensive, physical role he can minimize the negative impact of his lack of offensive tools. Watson is a bruising player with a legitimate intimidation factor for the other team, and he can match up with decently lethal offensive players on the other end. He won't win a Selke, but he's a good fourth line defensive winger/PK specialist.
