ARTEM ANISIMOV

ARTEM ANISIMOV - Center - 31 - $4.50MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022

LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Anisimov will always have a special place in my heart after his "sniper" celebration as a member of the NY Rangers. That being said, he's not the strong #2C he once was. After being elevated by playing with Jonathan Toews for a few years, Anisimov was shipped to Ottawa for Zack Smith, a player who cleared waivers about six months ago. Anisimov is an interesting case. He's not worth his cap hit, for starters, despite his decent enough 35-45 point production over the past few years. He's an incredibly inconsistent player, and has a Jamie Collins-like playstyle, seeming completely ON for one game and then having other shifts where he seems genuinely disinterested in the play unraveling before him. His footspeed has regressed, and his positioning skills are not where they once were. He's also a liability at the faceoff dot and should probably become a winger if his faceoff percentage dips below the steady 45% win rate it's remained steady at for the past half decade. That all being said, isolated impact metrics make Anisimov's case a bit confusing. His 5v5 metrics are poor, and he grades out as a net negative on offense and defense, but his penalty killing is graded as extremely strong. He has the history of being a good penalty killer, so this metric is one I trust, and his penalty killing ability boosts his value a bit. He can still be a good PK specialist and center a defensive third line, but as of right now he's still a negative value asset as a 3C PK specialist given his cap hit and the term left on his contract.
