ANTON KHUDOBIN - Goalie - 33 - $2.50MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/17/19
Judging on personality alone, Khudobin is an elite goaltender. He gives remarkably entertaining and candid interviews, and he's a threat to do something funny notable in every game, despite the fact that he's riding the pine most nights. That being said, Khudobin's on-ice value is not nearly as high. While he may be a unique, quirky talent in front of the camera and in front of the press, on the ice he's quite standard. By standard, I mean a standard high-end backup goalie. Khudobin is the perfect partner for Ben Bishop, who sometimes struggles to stay healthy and would benefit from load management, because Khudobin has the experience and durability to start 35+ games as a backup. His overall performance can fluctuate, but he's typically good for a .910+ sv% with .920+ upside. He was brilliant this past season for Dallas, with a 16.04 GSAA and a .923 sv%, and showed no signs of age. Despite being 33 years old, he's firmly in his goaltending prime and lacks any major flaw to his game. He doesn't have elite vision, and he isn't always the most composed in the net, but he squares up to pucks well and moves with intent. He won't steal a game but he also will likely not be the reason you lose it, and that's all you can ask for from a backup goalie. While he has shown some proneness to inconsistency and year-to-year volatility in his numbers, he's still a reliable backup goalie and one of the best pure #2's in the business.
