ANTOINE ROUSSEL - Left Winger - 29 - $3MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
After some fine seasons in Dallas as an agitator who can score a bit, the Vancouver Canucks rewarded Antoine Roussel's worst offensive season of his career with a decently pricey (for what he brings) free agent contract locking him up until 2022-2023 with an average salary of $3MM. Now, Roussel has some value at the NHL level. He's a true agitator, and he's not a guy teams want to play against. He gets under opposing players' skin, draws penalties, and can genuinely rattle thin-skinned opponents. Combine that with a decent offensive track record and some really underrated defense, and you get a valuable NHL winger. Sure, his value is limited. His agitation can help a team win some games, but make him an active liability in others, taking penalties he shouldn't take. He doesn't have great offensive tools, instead relying on sheer force of will to score, which is respectable but raises questions about how his body will hold up as he ages. Defensively, Roussel is physical and can kill penalties decently, but when he takes those bad penalties or struggles with defensive positioning that value takes a hit. Overall, he's a good fit on a third line as an agitator/defense-first winger with some genuine offensive upside.
